what is weft lab?
Weft Lab is an online course created for hair extensions specialists that goes in-depth into the art of weft customization.

Arguably the most important part of a hair extension appointment, taking the time to custom-color your guest’s hair extensions will allow your guest to feel confident that no matter what, their extensions will look so seamless and natural that it would fool even the most trained eye.

Nobody wants to be known as the girl who is obviously wearing hair extensions, so it is our job as stylists to help our guests feel like the thousands of dollars they’re investing in their hair is worth it. That means going above and beyond even in the areas our guest’s can’t see on a daily basis and it starts with the you: their stylist.

Foundations

Tools

As artists, the tools that we work with are just as important as the skills that we are portraying. I am very particular about the tools I use when customizing wefts for my guest and in this course I will dive deep into my favorites and why they will be your favorites as well.

Setup

Something as simple as a proper setup can be the difference between beautiful results, and errors that will be a hinderance to your efficiency. But don’t worry, you will learn all about how I set up my station and why it is so important.

Formulation

Feeling completely lost when formulating for weft customization is the perfect recipe for a panic attack. The good news is not only do I make it extremely simple to understand, but I also make it easy to convert my basic formulations to your own permanent and demi-permanent color line of choice. So try not to worry, take a deep breath, and trust that you’ll feel properly equipped when you’re faced with the art of formulating for your guest’s wefts.

Color Conservation

Have you ever had to secretly throw out large amounts of color because you over-mixed? Yeah, same. Lucky for you, I had to throw enough liquid gold into the trash to know exactly how much color you’ll have to mix for each technique to keep your wallet and your salon owners happy. No more wasted color, no more unhappy bosses.

Five Coloring Techniques

The Root Tap

Whether you’re creating a bold blonde or just adding a bit of pop around the front, this technique is a necessity when maintaining bold brightness while including the proper amount of dimension. Rarely are we working with 100% solid blondes, so respecting dimension in your wefts is necessary and the Root Tap will absolutely deliver.

The Root Smudge

You know that “black hole” in the back of the head that’s often left with minimal coloring? Yeah, you’ve got to acknowledge it’s there with your weft-coloring technique selection or the girl standing behind your client is gonna acknowledge it for you by sending it to @isthisyourclient. The Root Smudge technique is the most versatile way to add necessary depth in your boldest blondes, add pops of brightness to your high contrast/super rooty blondes, and will be your foundation for lived-in color.

The Root Drop

The next time you’re wondering if you should just throw a dimension-less weft into your guest who has super rooty/high contrast color, think again. No matter how well you try to hide it when they’re in your chair, one gust of wind and your guest will be a walking “don’t go to my extension stylist” advertisement for the next 6-8 weeks. The Root Drop is going to be your best friend when you have to maintain a LOT of dimension while maintaining brightness towards the ends.

The Row Refresh

Even though we’re initially coloring our guest’s wefts with long-lasting permanent color, the reality is that over time the color will fade. This technique will help you to not only refresh the color of your guests rows during a maintenance appointment, but also allow you to add more dimension if you feel it is necessary. The best part? You’ll be able to do it quickly. Speed is important, but efficiency with results is key. And efficiency with results is what you’ll get.

Fixing A Harsh Blend

With slightly different approach than the Row Refresh, you’ll learn how you can quickly correct a harsh blend in the moment if some wefts didn’t come out how you wanted them to. An added plus? If you have some left-over colored wefts that you didn’t end up using on a previous install that just need a darker root shade/more root saturation, this technique is going to save you so much time behind the chair.

Crosschecking

You will learn some super easy tips/tricks on how to check your work before it’s done processing to catch any harsh blends/errors that would otherwise cost you more time and money correcting later. Whether you’re brand new at these techniques or experienced, even I still utilize these tips every day in the salon to ensure amazing results every single time.

Troubleshooting

Listen, we’re human. No matter how hard we try, some days are better than others. This segment of the course will help ease your mind when errors occur, small or large, and help guide you with how to correct them. I’ll also hit you with some salon reality because to be honest, bad days happen to me too believe it or not. We’re in this together!
